Wissam Ben Yedder: "Now we have to go to the end"
He is EXCEPTIONAL! Once again impressive in leading the Monegasque attack, Wissam Ben Yedder allowed AS Monaco to turn the tables against Brest, thanks to a magnificent hat-trick in a 4-2 win. Leader of the comeback for the Rouge et Blanc, who fell behind 2-0 in the first half hour, our number 10 turned the match with his class. It was a performance that he reflected on with a smile in front of the press at the end of the match.
Hello Wissam. What a comeback this evening!
I think it’s a match where we were able to be patient, calm. We are sure of our strengths, and I think that showed. However, things didn’t start well for us, but in the end it was a victory. We are very happy with this latest win, but the important thing is to build on it in the last match in Lens.
Did you have some doubts after the second goal by the Brestois?
We believed in ourselves, and we all stood together, united. We spoke to each other at half-time, and we rectified what had been going poorly. It’s never easy to bounce back like this, it’s all about the small details. It was hard, but we came back very well in the second period, I managed to equalize and the third goal did us good soon thereafter. Then Kevin scored the fourth goal, so it was a good victory, and once again we are very happy.

After tonight you are in second place in the league. Do you realize how far you’ve come to get there?
We continued today with a ninth consecutive victory! It’s very good, but we know that there is still this last match to go. We are doing good things against teams that are really not easy to play against. After the victory against Paris Saint-Germain, we’ve managed to continue this run. We are calm today, but nothing has been decided. We will have to fight to secure our place until the end. So we will give everything in this last match in Lens. Not so long ago, no one thought we could get back to this level. We were able to rectify the situation and string together these victories. So now we have to go to the end. What we are achieving is very, very impressive, and we are all proud of that.
Personally you are only one goal behind Kylian Mbappé with this hat-trick. Is it a goal for you to be top scorer?
As I’ve said regularly, I always think of the collective first. If there is a top scorer trophy at the end of the season, so much the better, I will be happy, but the team remains the most important thing. I’m focused on winning these matches, even if today I scored a hat-trick which makes me very happy, because it has been a long time since I scored one. Now I want to seal qualification for the Champions League.
It’s your first with AS Monaco…
(He smiles) These are goals, and I’m used to scoring them! I’m happy, I have a very good feeling, I’m at a good level and I feel confident. Especially in a period like this with games with a lot at stake, it is never easy. Coming back in a match where you are down 2-0 is not easy. Everything is going well, let’s continue!
