Three AS Monaco players in L’Équipe's team of the week for Matchday 9
If the stands of the Stade Louis-II were empty this Sunday, due to the current health crisis, the play of Niko Kovac’s side made plenty of excitement. Eager to remain undefeated at home (three wins and two draws after Bordeaux), Caio Henrique’s teammates, with the Brazilian a starter for the first time in Ligue 1 on the left side of the Monegasque defense, easily handled Bordeaux (4-0). Just before the closing match of the 9th Matchday of the French league, the Red and Whites delivered a veritable festival of attacking football to the match’s viewers.

Brilliance in four minutes flat
And it happened very quickly, since after half an hour of tentative play between the two teams, the result was sealed in less than four minutes. It was first Wissam Ben Yedder, succesful once again from the penalty spot, after having scored a goal on a cross from Caio Henrique, which was eventually disallowed for an opponent’s handball, who got things started (1-0, 27th). Soon thereafter, Ruben Aguilar pulled away to play a ball across goal for Gelson Martins, on the lookout at the far post, who pushed the ball into the net with a sumptuous touch (2-0, 29 ‘).
Kevin Volland then scored his first goal with AS Monaco. On the play, Caio Henrique was once again sharp, playing a long ball for Wissam Ben Yedder, who took his time to deliver a pinpoint pass onto the head of the German center forward, who was happy to score his first goal in his new colors (3-0, 30′). So happy, indeed, as he took an opportunity to make it a double in the 57th minute of play. The German took advantage again of superb work by his captain, who was the author of a magnificent piece of control and a sublime pass for Gelson Martins — Kevin Volland then found himself alone in front of goal after a fine cross from the Portuguese winger (4-0).

A top-class weekend for Caio Henrique and Volland
The case was closed, and AS Monaco claimed their fourth victory this season in Ligue 1, their third at home. It was a high-level performance, one could even call it a benchmark, which allowed three Monegasque players to be named in the team of the round for Matchday 9 on Monday morning. Caio Henrique, with seven balls recovered and 100% of duels won on the occasion of his first start in Ligue 1,Wissam Ben Yedder and Kevin Volland, scorer of two goals with his three shots on target, were all a part of the eleven composed of the best players of the weekend at their positions by the sports daily l’Équipe. It was a nice reward for the Brazilian left back, his captain, as well as for the German striker, who had already delivered two assists for Ben Yedder against Strasbourg on Matchday 5.
