Versatility, his foundation, honours… All you need to know about Thilo Kehrer
He is the first reinforcement for the Principality club during this winter transfer window. A central defender with a “dynamic, athletic and aggressive” style, as he says of himself, Thilo Kehrer signed this Friday on loan, with an option to buy. Before he plays his first minutes in official competition with AS Monaco, find out what you need to know about the former PSG player in particular. Portrait. ✍️
The ninth German to feature for AS Monaco 🇩🇪
By signing this Friday, Thilo Kehrer will become the ninth German to join the ranks of AS Monaco. The first of these was Uwe Krause in the 1980s, before Jürgen Klinsmann,Oliver Bierhoff and Andreas Wolf followed him a few decades later. These were followed by Benjamin Henrichs, Kevin Volland and Alexander Nübel. If the latter two left the Principality club this summer, this is not the case for the Senegalese-German Ismail Jakobs, who has featured in 15 matches this season.
A versatile defender 🪢
Like several players in the Monegasque squad, Kehrer has the strength of being able to play in several positions. If his main position is as a central defender, he has also played as a full back or defensive midfielder and knows the three-man central defender system perfectly, having played there in particular with PSG under Thomas Tuchel. There is no doubt that it will therefore be a great additional asset for Adi Hütter.

He speaks perfect French 🗣️
Born in southern Germany in Tübingen, Thilo also has Burundian origins on his mother’s side, thanks to which he speaks French perfectly. This will be a major asset for his successful integration into the Monegasque locker room, especially since he is also able to express himself in German and English.
His own foundation 🫶
Speaking of Burundi, Thilo has not forgotten his mother’s native country an even created his own foundation, with the aim of helping young people in difficulty. The Thilo Kehrer Center, for example, was founded in June 2022, designed to help residents of the Burundian capital, Gitega, grow and develop. “The Foundation is very, very important to me and going there to see the work is always personally very rewarding. Just to see the people there, the joy they have, and the talent and potential they all have too,” he said with pride.

Plenty of trophies🏆
At just 27 years old and having spent time with Schalke, Paris and West Ham, Kehrer has won plenty of honors with eight trophies already won, including three Ligue 1 titles, two Coupes de France, a Coupe de la Ligue and a Trophée des Champions. This is without forgetting reaching a Champions League final in 2020. But the most prestigious undoubtedly remains the Conference League won with the English club last year, a title in which he greatly participated, playing a total of 10 matches out of 15 possible. A substitute in the final against Fiorentina, he came on at the hour mark.
Captain and… champion 🏅
If he has therefore won eight titles as a professional, and we must nevertheless not forget those won in the youth categories. In 2015, Thilo also became a German U19 champion with Schalke alongside Leroy Sané for example. A title all the more symbolic as he was the captain of the team. Then two years later, this time with his selection, he was crowned European champion with Germany at U-21 level, with a 1-0 victory in the final against Spain.
He took part in the 2022 World Cup 🌍
With extensive club experience (161 matches played professionally), Thilo also has experience with his national team. Called up 27 times since 2018, he even competed in one of the biggest possible competitions: the World Cup. Present in Hansi Flick’s squad, he started in the second match against Spain which ended with a draw.
Unbeaten against Monaco 🇲🇨
With Paris from 2018 to 2022, the German defender faced the Principality club four times with as many wins and only one goal conceded. On the other hand, the results were much less in favor of the Parisians when he was on the bench or absent from the scoresheet since AS Monaco won three times against a draw and a narrow defeat (nine goals conceded) .
He has played several matches with Breel 🤝
Trained at Schalke where he played professionally from 2016 to 2018, the native of Tübingen was able to rub shoulders with around fifty different players. Among them, a Monegasque player appears: Breel Embolo. The two have been together on the pitch together sixteen times for a record of eight wins, four draws and four defeats. They also scored in the same match against Hoffenheim in February 2018, something else to to facilitate his integration into the Principality.
