Kevin Volland named to L'Équipe's team of the round for Matchday 18
We left 2020 with Kevin Volland scoring in his last match of the year against Saint-Etienne (2-2). In the new year, the Monegasuqe forward, already named played of the month in each of the last two months, seems not to have changed many of his resolutions and continues to fill the nets in Ligue 1. He was once again one of the major architects of AS Monaco’s win at Lorient (5-2). Another high-flying performance saw him again appear in L’Équipe’s team of the round for Matchday 18 in Ligue 1, for the second time since his arrival on the Rock.

A decisive aerial game
With a goal in the wake of Lorient equalizing through Andreaw Gravillon, the German striker allowed the Red and Whites to once again take the lead in the 68th minute (3-2). From a brilliant pass by Guillermo Maripán, Kevin Volland scored with a lobbed header that left no chance for Paul Nardi to intervene. Ten minutes later, he turned provider, again with his head. On a cross by Aklesandr Golovin, he found Sofiane Diop who summarily scored his fifth goal of the season.

On the way to a double-double?
With eight goals and four assists, the German international has had fine series of performances. He has also scored a goal in each of his last three matches in Ligue 1, a first for him in the league since October 2019, when he achieved the same performance with Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. Involved in 12 goals to date in the top flight this season, he is only beaten by his compatriot Thomas Müller (14), among the German players who have been the most decisive across the five major European leagues.
Thanks to him, an AS Monaco player finds his way back to the Ligue 1 team of the week, the latest since Ruben Aguilar and Youssouf Fofana in the victory over Nîmes on Matchday 12.
