Cercle wins again to stay in the Top 10
A victory to get things started again! By beating the bottom side in the Belgian league, Beerschot, on Saturday at the Jan-Breydel stadium (2-0), the players of Cercle Bruges are back to winning ways. Now winners of nine of their last 13 matches in the Jupiler Pro League, the Groen-Zwart can approach the end of the season more calmly, and even dream of a place in the play-offs! With now 15 points ahead of the first relegation spot, the sister club of AS Monaco can also breathe easier when it comes to staying in the top flight.
Another goal for Rabbi Matondo
The teammates of Boris Popovic, who started in central defense, made the difference in the first half. Former Nîmes striker Kevin Denkey opened the scoring with a header in the 27th minute for his third goal of the season. Then the clever Welsh winger, Rabbi Matondo, was responsible for doubling the lead just before the break (2-0, 45 + 1′).
Scorer of his eighth goal in the league this season, he confirmed a match that was dominated by Bruges, to give three fresh points to Cercle. With 38 points to date, Dominik Thalhammer’s men are now in ninth place in the standings, before their trip to Mechelen Saturday (6:30 p.m.). Bravo to them!
