Wissam “record” Ben Yedder is MVP of a crazy match against OL
His impressive performance was not enough. Yet, Wissam Ben Yedder seems to have decided to make the big match against Lyon his own. A starter at the forefront of the attack in a duo with Folarin Balogun, it was in fact the Monegasque number 10 who opened the scoring in the 22nd second of play, following a recovery and a transition led by Maghnes Akliouche. This is the Club’s fastest goal in the 21st century, says Opta… in the middle of the fog!
The fastest goal since 2000
On the lookout at the far post, he was in fact on the end of a cross by Takumi Minamino, deflected by Balo’, to put the ball into the back of the net and get AS Monaco off to a (very) good start at Groupama Stadium (0-1, 1′)! By the way, it was a 12th goal this season in Ligue 1 for the captain, who was not going to stop there. While OL managed to turn the match around before half-time, he returned from the locker room with the desire to be decisive again.
One more step in the history of AS Monaco
And it would be, since on a brilliant Monegasque moment, Youssouf Fofana sent him a perfect cross, from which he placed an unstoppable header between two Lyon defenders, to beat Anthony Lopes a second time (2-2, 61′)! It was an important goal, since beyond being the equalizer, it allowed Wissam Ben Yedder to score his 115th achievement in La Diagonale, joining Lucien Cossou in second place among the best scorers in the history of the Club.
Not (at all) far from the a hat trick…
Being runner-up to Delio Onnis could have been his alone, if VAR had not refused his goal to make it 3-2 from a free kick by Krépin Diatta (78t’ for being offside by a few centimeters! It was terrible luck as his volley from the left flew under the crossbar of the helpless Rhone goalkeeper. Unfortunately the Monegasques, who were almost too enterprising, would then concede a final Lyon goal just before added time.
