It's back-to-back for Wissam Ben Yedder, MVP against Clermont
He was the key player in this home victory! Following a good performance against Lyon, Wissam Ben Yedder did the same against Clermont this Saturday to guide his team a little further towards the Champions League (4-1). With two goals and an assist, the captain of the Rouge et Blanc even became the Club’s second all-time top scorer in all competitions, passing a certain Lucien Cossou!
An assist to get things started
Once again a starter, he first helped Takumi Minamino score the first goal with a fine shot into the top corner (1-0, 16′) before Clermont came back to level the score (1-1, 34th). An immediate reaction from AS Monaco was therefore expected.
It was then time for Wiss’ to respond himself by making a superb through ball for Breel Embolo who would score his first goal of the season (2-1, 37′). With his team ahead at the break, the French striker did not intend to stop there.
Cossou’s record broken!
This is what he would do from the start of the second half, with a goal from inside the area to widen the lead (3-1, 56′). With this 116th goal, he ovetook Lucien Cossou (115) in the ranking of AS Monaco’s top scorers in all competitions and thus enters a little further into the Club’s history. He then came close to netting a double in the 75th minute but his goal was finally denied for a slight offside.

In a (very) small group with Onnis and Lacombe
It was not enough to stop him, only to delay the inevitable as he was decisive again at the end of the match to confirm this home win, the team’sthird in a row, by wrong-footing the Clermont goalkeeper, after being cleverly picked out by Takumi Minamino (4-1, 88′).
This double which allows him to both equal the level of Lucien Cossou in the number of goals scored in Ligue 1 (97 each) and to reach the threshold of 15 goals in the league this season for the eighth time in his career. Since Opta has been recoring this data (1947-1948), only Delio Onnis (12) and Bernard Lacombe (10) have simply had more seasons with at least 15 goals in the top flight.

In the French team of the weekend
This latest big performance for Wissam Ben Yedder was impressive on the scoresheet and statistically, since he has the best of Xg, the highest total of the match on passes in the final third (32), as well as on those leading to a shot (4).
Celebrated by his teammates, and also by the supporters who named him MVP with 86.4% of the vote, the Monégasque capitain was also named by L’Equipe in their best French players of the weekend, alongside Félix Lemarechal. Bravo Wiss’ !👏
